Pressed seaweed specimens from a two volume collection "Marine Plante". Purchased in France. Much like the herbier (a collection of plant specimens), the alguier are collections of seaweeds from oceans and seas around the world. In the late 19th century collecting seaweed samples (Algiers) was the rage for affluent Europeans, these collectors spent hours drying, pressing and mounting these samples they found on their travels.
